racketeering charges. the group is the top focus in the investigation into the deaths of mark hasse and mike mcclelland and his wife cynthia. >> officials in west virginia are searching for a motive after a county sever was gunned down -- county sherrif was gunned down. eugene crumb was gunned down in his car outside a courthouse. the suspect was taken by police. crumb had a strong reputation for being tough on drug dealers. investigators aren't ruling out this could have been a connection to the murders in texas. >> it is being called the most far-reaching gun control legislation in the country. overnight connecticut lawmakers approved a wide-ranging bill with sweeping gun restrictions. the law is expand's the state's assault weapons ban, mandates mandatory background checks for all firearm sales and bans the

sale or purchase of magazines with more than ten rounds. lawmakers from both parties admit the bill is not perfect and fails to focus enough on mental health. democratic governor dan malloy plans to sign the bill. >> one of the two teenage hikers who had been lost for days in southern california's national forest has been found alive. here's video of the 19-year-old. you can see him being rolled into a hospital late last night. he was dehydrated and very confused and right now he's in serious condition at that hospital. a tip from another hiker led them to the missing teen. >> we were able to insert an airship in there and send a rescue down and speak to him. >> police are still trying to find an 18-year-old. >> louisville guard kevin ware -- everyone is talking about this story -- arriving in atlanta to be with his team for the final four weekend and he's

breaking his silence about what exactly went through his head after his horrific injury. >> honestly i felt no pain. at the time i didn't know my leg was broken. the only reason i glanced at my leg because the coach's eyes looked like he had seen a ghost or something he had never seen before. i understood why because when he saw my leg, my bone was six inches out of it. >> the team is wearing "win it for kevin" t-shirts which you see there. ware adds he has no desire to see that video of that injury and i definitely don't blame him. that is your five at 5. >> let's talk about this. north korea is taking its threats to a new level overnight. its army just ratified -- listen to this -- a nuclear strike against america. we are live in washington with the latest. washington now responding. good morning. >> that's right. the combat iive -- the

combative language continues, north korea claims it authorizes nuclear attacks against the u.s. an unnamed spokesperson from kim jong un's staff releasing a statement from the state run media saying the u.s. better propb tker over the -- ponder over the grave situation. the south korean minister says there are no signs that pyongyang is preparing for a full-scale conflict. chuck hagel says washington is doing everything it can to defuse the situation. washington keeps more than 28,000 troops in south korea to protect its ally. >> as they have ratcheted up their bellicose, dangerous rhetoric and some of the actions they've taken over the last few weeks present a real and clear danger and threat to the interests certainly of our allies, starting with south korea.

>> south korea's defense ministry says the country is ready to deal with provocation by north korea, but we are seeing a little bit of action from pyongyang. north korean officials blocked south koreans from entering a jointly run industrial park about two days in a row and the government is threatening to pull tens of thousands of north korean workers which would really only further cripple their economy. the pentagon meanwhile continues to take all the threats we're hearing seriously. they're sending army systems to a western pacific territory, home to a number of military bases. officials say this particular system is capable of shooting down short, medium and other ballistic missiles. they say they're prepared. >> thank you so much. heather. >> now to some stories you can bank on this morning. spring, of course, should be a time of fresh beginnings, but the economy, at least in terms of the economy that may not be the case. it may be frozen.

adam shapiro from the fox business network joins us to explain. it doesn't feel like spring either. mother nature isn't listening. >> economists aren't listening because we're getting data that indicate things would not be as strong as we would like. yesterday we got the a.d.p. report which says private sector job creation was 158,000. we were expecting 200,000. tomorrow when we get the unemployment situation, the labor department's unemployment numbers, people are nervous. it is not just that report from a.d.p. that has them nervous, but also the fact we're seeing a slowdown in other survey. i.s.m. puts out a survey of different kinds of manufacturers. orders are slowing down. bottom line? people are worried the economy is slowing down this spring. >> now to someone, or at least a band nowhere near slowing down, rolling stone, new ticket prices --

they are going to have another tour? >> it will kick off in may in los angeles. they will hit philadelphia, toronto, chicago. they are calling it 50 and counting. they have been rocking for 50 years. some people are referring to it as the aluminum walker tour. these gentlemen are old enough to be grandparents but they still get as much as $1,500 a ticket. their last worldwide tour 144 shows. this is the number-one rock and roll band in the world. >> i've seen them in concert several years ago. they're awesome. for this tour the stage is going to be shaped like lips. >> mick jagger's lips. >> thank you so much for joining us. we appreciate it ending on a good note. heather. >> call it the aarp tour. on to another story. the nbc is now confirming the rumors that late night host jimmy fallon is going

to replace jay leno on the tonight show. ainsley earhardt has more on this announcement. i'm going to miss leno. >> it is the end of an era, ending weeks of speculation, nbc confirming after 22 years jay leno will be stepping down as the host of the tonight show. jimmy fallon, currently the star of late night, will take over. fallon got the news right -- or got to that news right off the bat last night on his show. >> this is late night with jimmy fallon for now. you guys probably heard the news, i'm going to be taking over for the tonight show next february. [cheers and applause] >> jay leno taking some time during his monolog to wish the new host well. >> i want to congratulate a good friend, jimmy fallon. he is a hell of a guy. he's going to do a great job. i just have one request of jimmy. we've all kicked and

update. >> maria keeping an eye on severe weather in the south. >> today we're tracking an area of low pressure that will be producing areas of heavy rain and even the risk for severe storms pretty much widespread across the state of florida. cities like jacksonville, if you live in tampa, miami, you have a chance to see damaging wind gusts, large hail and isolated tornadoes from some of these storms. if you get any rotation there will be a chance you see a tornado warning for your county. that is when you need to seek shelter immediately because there could be a tornado on the ground. that is when a tornado warning gets issued. otherwise heavy rain with the storm system. it has already dumped anywhere between two to three or four inches of rain across portions of the gulf coast over the past 48 hours. this storm system is relatively slow moving and does produce areas of heavy rain. you're going to need the umbrella today and plan to see possible travel delays across sections of the southeast. temperatures associated with this storm system very cool as well.

atlanta, your high temperature today is going to be 46 degrees, well below average for this time of the year. it is going to be cooler in atlanta than the city of minneapolis where you're expecting a high temperature at 49 degrees. a little bit unusual. for those across the eastern half of the country that are sick and tired of the winter-like temperatures, good news coming up this weekend, you will be seeing a rebound in those temperatures. well below average across parts of the southeast and even into the state of texas as far as high temperatures go for today. >> maria, are warm temperatures going to stick around? >> this time around looks pretty good, at least in the northeast. i'm not going to raol out another -- not going to rule out another brief cooldown. >> the time is 11 after the top of the hour. coming up, president obama heads to colorado to push for more gun control. >> it was completely inappropriate. these officers have a job to do. they should be on the street protecting their

but south korea believes one long range missile has been moved. the intentions of north korean dictator kim jong un are still very much in question. u.s. defenses if the region include ship and land based interceptor systems. one has been moved to guam as it is acknowledged north korea has nuclear capability. >> some of the actions taken over the past few weeks present a real and clear danger and threat to the interests of certainly of our allies starting with south korea. >> the threat for now is largely regional. north korea does not possess the kind of missile technology it is widely believed to actually reach the united states. but even a strike in this region could cause mayhem. >> i think in terms of reaching the united states, that that's unlikely to say the least, and possible probably. but it's not to

underestimate north korea's capability to do something to south korea or japan. i think the that the risk of this increasingly belligerent rhetoric, they're well past prior north korean play books on this. >> but so far we haven't seen any major troop movements in north korea, and that may be a sign that the latest provocations are simply bluster. >> here's the thing: we don't know that much about kim jong un yet. thank you, doug. time now to take a look at who is talking. yesterday president obama delivering a speech on gun control. his backdrop? police officers. >> not everyone is pleased with the president's choice of location and that backdrop. larama county sherrif tells greta van susteren he feels his state has been used as a pawn. >> these officers have a job to do, should be used

on the streets protecting their community not used as political props. the officers i talked with are disgusted they had been cajoled to be on stage. >> some of the police officers didn't show up today or didn't stand by the president. is that in part because of the controversial new gun control law in colorado? is that what is sort of distressing some police officers or members of law enforcement? >> absolutely. that's what really went over the edge. i personally spoke with some officers that came out to the rally that the sherrifs and i, colorado sherrifs held, and they told us that they were adamantly opposed to these gun measures the president pushed on colorado. and they were really disgusted bid idea of being pushed up there. what bothers us is we've been a pawn in a political play certainly following the tragedies that occurred out here in aurora as well as the one in newtown, that there was a nationwide

political agenda between a billionaire mayor bloomberg and the president. they're trying to impose chicago and washington, d.c. policies on colorado. they didn't work there and they will not work in fort collins, colorado either. >> the sherrif went on to say the issues surrounding violence cannot simply be fixed by legislation. >> time now to entertain this. it is official, jay leno is out and jimmy fallon is in. the 38 #-year-old is the new host of the tonight show. nbc plans to make the switch next year after its coverage of the winter olympics. the show is also moving to new york city. >> it was rock n'roll night on american idol. so who impressed you the ♪

city of miami. there is that possibility for severe storms throughout the afternoon and into the evening hours today. otherwise temperatures along the storm system very cool. 46 degrees will be your high temperature in atlanta, in the 50's in memphis. we're talking temperatures as much as 15 degrees below what is normal for this time of year and the 40's for the city of raleigh. actually cooler in parts of the southeast and sections of the midwest like minneapolis where you're talking 49 for your high temperature. we'll make it into the 50's in new york city. the good news across the east is we are expecting a significant warmup in parts of the southeast with your high temperatures. in the northeast, your high temperatures won't be increasing that much over the next several days. nighttime lows only dipping into the 50's. the same goes for new york city. >> maria, thank you so much. the time is 40 minutes after the hour. coming up, you've heard president obama say the economy is getting better, but there are startling new

>> good morning. it is 44 minutes after the hour. let's span the globe to see what stories are making headlines overseas. first to afghanistan. that right there is one of the deadliest insurgent attacks since the afghan war started. taliban fighters disguised as afghan soldiers storming a government compound leading to a seven-hour standoff. at least 44 people are dead

including the 9 attackers. next to russia, and that's where a high rise goes up in flames. luckily it was before it was finished being built. the apartment building was empty at the time. it's part of a new luxury complex funded by the nation's capital. the cause of that fire is under investigation. >> finally to germany, where a potentially dangerous situation as a live bomb from world war ii is found at the capital. it was a soviet-made bomb and it was found by workers at a building site in berlin just about a mile from the city's train station. trains were delayed and the neighborhood was evacuated until experts were able to defuse that bomb. heather? >> it's time for a segment we like to call what the hill? when you hear these stories, you will know why. americans could be hit with a surprise bill courtesy of obamacare. under the president's plan, any government subsidies you receive to buy health

insurance is based on your current income. however, if your income increases next year, you will qualify for the smaller subsidy and will be forced to pay back the difference. and tens of thousands of people will be hired as navigators to help people choose obamacare options starting october 1. it's not going to be cheap. plans show those navigators will be paid between $20 to $48 an hour. >> those folks certainly wouldn't be poor, but president obama continued to say that the economy is on the road to recovery, but listen to this. there is new data out there that shows that the number of americans living in poverty has spiked to levels not seen since the mid-1960's. >> diane macedo from the fox business network has the details. >> the u.s. census bureau says as of january nearly 50 million americans, one in six, were living below the poverty line, including 20% of american children. that means the poverty rate

has grown from 14.3% in 2009 to now almost 17% of the country. and the number of americans participating in food stamp programs have also nearly tripled over the past decade. while some reports are warning that the sequestration cuts are bound to make this worse, it's interesting to note that these numbers all worsened amid a massive increase in spending to fight poverty. federal spending on the poor hit more than $569 billion in fiscal year 2011. that's a 5,500% increase from 1907 which far outpaces inflation. in the past two years the federal government spent more than $1 trillion on programs for the poor and yet the percentage of working americans is down and the rate of americans living in poverty which for a family of four means earning less than $23,021 a year, continues to climb. while spending cuts may make matters worse, it seems spending increases aren't making them better. >> thanks so much, diane. >> the time now is almost

>> welcome back. it is 51 after the top of the hour. quick headlines. shocking video from inside a prison. prison inmates using drugs, drinking beer and holding loaded guns. the video was taken in 2009 at orleans parish prison. the former sherrif is being sued for allegedly making inmates live in unsafe and inhumane conditions. the prison was shut down last year. >> a surfer recovering after being bitten by a shark. this all went down at a beach in maui when a four-foot reef shark bit the man's leg.

the man is being treated at a maui hospital. police warning beach goers within a mile of the attack to stay out of the water. >> those are some headlines you have right there. listen to this one. it appears the triumph goeth, trouble follows it. the carnival cruise ship has been damaged once again and one employee is missing. this time high winds sent a drifting alabama river. >> the carnival cruise ship that was disabled in the gulf of mexico two months ago damaged again after it broke free from its moorings. the triumph was docked at a shipyard in mobile, alabama, when it happened. >> it wasn't planned obviously. it broke its moorings. there happened to be a tugboat in the area and it was alongside. once this big ship got sideways there was no stopping it. then it collided with the other ship. >> the other vessel went way over the side and then come back and then the back of it hit, and then it

pinned the tugboat in between. >> high wind are likely to blame. carnival cruise line saying -- quote -- "we can confirm all crew members and contractors who were working aboard carnival triumph have been accounted for. additionally we're hearing reports of wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour." as the ship was dislodged heavy winds knocked over a guard shack causing two to fall into the water. the coast guard says one has been rescued but a shipyard worker is still missing. the triumph -p was disabled on february 10 by an engine fire. despite additional damage, carnival cruise line says the triumph is expected to be back in service june 3 as scheduled. >> the time is 54 minutes after the hour. next, it is always fun to enter a world of make-believe. now lego land is about to make families smile.
